Dr. Bert Rowland

Dr. Bert Rowland has practiced patent law and has written seminal patents in diagnostics, molecular biology (including the Cohen Boyer cloning patent for Stanford and UC, the first patent in biotechnology), cell biology, agricultural biology, combinatorial chemistry, contrast media, calcium phosphates for the treatment of bone, and chemical reactions (particularly epoxidation), for a total of over 500 patents.

Bert first worked for Chevron as patent counsel. He has been a partner of Townsend & Townsend and Leydig, Voit & Mayer and Of Counsel to other law firms. He was president of Drug Abuse Sciences and General Counsel of SyStemix. He was instrumental or played a major role in the founding of many start-up companies, including SyStemix, Pharmacopoeia, Calgene, Immulogic Pharmaceuticals, Molecular Devices, Receptron, and Matrix Pharmaceutical, and played a prominent role with numerous other start-up companies.

Bert holds both a PhD in Organic Chemistry and a JD, Order of the Coif.
